As an attentive & safe passenger car driver, I pledge to:

HANG IT UP!

  • When I'm driving, I will put my cellphone and all electronic distractions away in NTTC’s FREE Hang It Up! bag or somewhere else it won’t distract me.
  • I will not take these distracting devices back out until I am safely pulled over and parked.

BE AN ACTIVE, SAFE DRIVER

  • When I’m driving, I will not participate in any distracting activities. This means no texting, surfing the Internet, putting on makeup, watching a video, gaming, posting on social media, or taking photos and videos while I’m behind the wheel.
  • When I’m driving, I pledge to do so attentively, keeping my eyes on the road, vehicle gauges, mirrors, and other vehicles. If I can’t, I pledge to pull over and stop the vehicle until I can.

HELP OTHERS STAY FOCUSED

  • When I know they are driving, I will not call or text other people.
  • I will encourage others to not accept calls or respond to texts when driving unless they are using hands-free options or until they are safely pulled over with their vehicle in park.
  • I will invite as many other people as possible to stand beside me in NTTC’s Zero Distractions Campaign!

Petition to Outlaw Texting While Driving Across the U.S.

Distracted driving should be illegal in all U.S. Territories.

Distracted driving has become a lethal epidemic. At any given moment, 660,000 drivers are using an

electronic device on America’s roads. In 2015 alone, distracted driving claimed 3,477 lives and injured 391,000 more.

A driver who is texting is over 23 times more likely to have an accident than an active and attentive driver – making it almost 2.5 times more dangerous than even driving while intoxicated.

Despite this clear and present danger to Americans, texting while driving is not yet illegal everywhere in the U.S. While legislation has been passed in many jurisdictions, it is not yet nationwide.
